For centuries, pewter has been the material of choice for countertops in European cafés and homes. More recently, pewter countertops have become popular in the U.S. Unlike other metals that show unappealing scratches and nicks, pewter, which is a relatively soft material, develops a warm, appealing character with use.

Oster Pewter now supplies lead-free pewter as mill sheet in widths up to 28" and, depending on thickness, in lengths of 100" or more, dimensions optimized for countertops. Panels can be joined by using lead-free solders, or welded, using thin strips of pewter as welding rod. Typically, the pewter sheet is fastened to a subsurface of MDF or similar material using contact cement.

Pewter's versatility gives artisans several finish options for countertops: a smooth, polished finish, a matte or satin finish, or even a hand-hammered finish. Edge details can be created by rolling the top surface over a form (producing a seamless edge), or welding a decorative piece to the edge.
